Tips and advice for when you are moving

Start early and create an overview
If you start a few weeks before the move, you’ll have time to stay organised. You need to buy or borrow moving boxes, decide whether you can handle the move yourself or need to arrange a moving van, and you’ll have the chance to start decluttering. This is the moment to sort through your belongings – there’s no reason to drag along everything you never use anyway. Many people think, “I’ll sort that out in the new place,” but trust us – once you’re there, you’ll likely just shove everything into a closet because you won’t have the energy.
Choose the right transport
It can be difficult to determine the best means of transport. In short:
- Moving trailer: suitable for a room or small studio
- Moving van: for a standard apartment
- Moving company: for a larger apartment or a house
If you need a moving company, book it at least a few weeks in advance.
Make sure moving boxes don’t get too heavy
For your own back – and that of any helpers – it’s important that the boxes don’t get too heavy. For example, when emptying a bookshelf, place 1–2 layers of books at the bottom of different boxes and fill the rest with lighter items. This protects the bottom of the box and everyone’s backs.
Don’t forget to protect fragile items – use duvets, T-shirts or towels. It’s cheaper than newspapers and better for the environment.
Extra tip: Write on each box what’s in it and where it should go. That way you can easily instruct: “this one is for the bedroom”, “this one goes to the kitchen”, and so on.
Pack an “in case of emergency” bag
Prepare a small bag with items you’ll need immediately upon arrival at your new home.
For example:
- Toothbrush and toothpaste
- Contact lenses
- Phone charger
- Clean underwear and T-shirt
- A snack for when you’re really hungry
Take photos of both the old and the new home
Once the last box is out and the old home has been cleaned, it’s important to take photos of its condition.
Do the same when you enter your new home – take pictures of how it looks. This prevents misunderstandings about any damage that was already there.
Don’t forget your address changes
Finally: don’t forget to update your address in important places.
Find a new doctor and dentist
If you move to another city, you can switch to a new doctor for free. Use the correct link on the official website to arrange this easily.
Update your address for your subscriptions
Many people forget to update their address for their monthly subscriptions. Think of contact lenses, magazines, protein powder, or other recurring deliveries.
